THAT NIGHT FOR DINNER she wore the peach colored Mexican dress. It was loose and cool, modest over the bodice, gauzy cotton draping in folds down her back so that the movement of air cooled the flesh of her upper back.

She stared at her reflection in the mirror as she brushed the sea tangles out of her hair. When she reached for the pins, she paused. Jonathan's eyes would narrow if she came out with her hair dressed up. Before the evening was over he would find some way to send her hair tumbling down.

Her hand went to the jumble of silk scarves on the dresser but the colors were wrong for the dress. She picked up the brush again and slowly pulled it through her dark hair until it was a glossy stream tumbling down almost to her waist.

She'd grown it when she was young and all these years it would have been so much easier to cut it short. Why hadn't she cut it? Because of the look in Jonathan's eyes when he touched her hair? Because of the memories?

If she went out to join him with her hair loose down her back...

Oh, God! It was only hair! Only protein and coloring.

She would put her copy of the contract in her handbag. Just in case Jonathan needed reminding that until she issued a plain invitation— until...

She didn't have a lot of sense where Jonathan Halley was concerned. She'd always been susceptible. She'd better remember that. Remember that she'd loved him once before, that whatever he'd felt for her had melted into nothing then.

He wasn't willing to talk about yesterday. Nothing to say about the past. Nothing to say about the fact that she'd cried out to him and she'd been desperate. That he'd heard her and he'd still walked back into that damned house and Alicia had been watching through the window and—

It was a nightmare that didn't bear repeating.

The music in the dining room was slower tonight... the rhythm deeper. There was a different singer, a young man with a deep voice who sang Spanish songs. She couldn't understand them but she didn't need to hear the word amor to know they were love songs.

There were more people tonight, perhaps because it was a Saturday. It was a quiet crowd, atmosphere and music for slow dining and dancing. They ordered lobster. Cynthia tried to focus on the taste but the music and Jonathan's silence caught her between reality and dreams. They ate slowly, no words. Only an electric pulse that kept time with the singer, a heavy beat as if the world were holding its breath.

Crazy to sip the potent liquor when there was already madness playing with the caution in her veins. Dangerous to let her eyes seek Jonathan's as he leaned back to let the waiter whisk his dinner plate away.

Jonathan held her gaze as he lifted his own glass. She watched as he slowly drained it. When he put it down, she swallowed. She could feel his invitation before it came.
